Emergency Contraception
The morning after pill is a regimen of high doses of standard birth control that can be taken up to 72 hours after unprotected sex. The sooner the woman takes it, the more effective it is: 90% after the first 24 hours, 75% after the first 48, and 50% after 72 hours. The pills work by preventing the release of the egg into the ovary which is called ovulation. If the egg has already been released then the hormone prevents the egg from sticking to the inside of the uterus by causing inflammation, not giving it a chance to be fertilized. This medication is not an abortion pill which it is often mistaken for. It simply acts exactly the same as standard birth control preventing conception in the first place.
I believe that this medication could have a great deal of impact on the rates of unwanted births and pregnancy if the public is better educated about what it is and how it works. Abortion is a touchy subject that even many supporters believe is something......
