The 1960 Election of John F. Kennedy and Richard M. Nixon was a very close campaign. The main topics raised were that of the Soviet USSR's rising economic growth rate compared to that of the United States. The other topic at hand was John F. Kennedy's religious belief. The majority of American Protestants didn't know what to think about him.
After World War two Americans became afraid of the Soviet Union's inclining power. The idea of Communism over taking America's strong Capitalistic view scared the masses and they needed comfort in knowing that America's values would be protected by that of the USSR's. Soviet Union was beginning to rise in power, already controlling Germany, they now occupied a large majority of Asia and the northern part of Europe. This, of course, freaked everyone out, so each candidate promised to protect America from Soviet oppression and to stop the Cold War.
John F. Kennedy's religious belief of Catholicism was a big issue during the campaign. People......
