Logical vs. Physical Design of a Network
In the world of network design, there are two common design types; the logical network design and the physical network design. A logical network design can be described as how the network will be structured, basically all logical aspects of the network. According to Webopedia, "the logical topology is the way that the signals act on the network media, or the way that the data passes through the network from one device to the next without regard to the physical interconnection of the devices."
In a logical network layout, IP addresses are shown to be associated with different parts of the network. One such element of a logical network includes assigned IP addresses to devices such as routers, switches, servers, workstations and other devices utilized on a network. Logical design usually do not show the actual interfaces and physical cables in the diagrams; thus the term "logical".
