Cyrano is a true hero, because his qualities are bravery, self-sacrifice, and loyalty. He doesn't want to let down his loved ones, so he puts himself in jeopardy for them.

I say I'll be the man to-night that sees you home" (Act.I Pg.45). He shows bravery and loyalty when he assures Ligniere and the audience that he will show them the safe way home. He fought off one hundred men that De Guiche sent after Ligniere, yet he asked for nothing in return. He only wanted to see his friend get home safely, which shows that his gesture made him a one-of-a-kind hero.
