In The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin we observe many instances of irony. Irony is the use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their literal meaning. In this story there are three different types of irony used, they are: situational, dramatic and verbal. Situational irony is used to show the reader that what is expected to happen sometimes doesn't. Dramatic irony is used to fill the reader in on something that the characters in the story do not know about. Verbal irony is a figure of speech in which what is said is the opposite of what is meant.
Situational irony is used in "The Story of an Hour" through Mrs. Mallard's reaction to her husband's death. When she first heard the news of her husband's death, Mrs. Mallard, "wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment" (188).
