"A Contrasting and Comparative analysis
of Jonathan Bennett and Mary Midgley"

In Jonathan Bennett's essay "The Conscience of Huckleberry Finn" Bennett invites us to contemplate the "relationship between sympathy on one hand and bad morality on the other" (Arthur 24). Bennett warns us that our feelings for another person's plight should not be confused with judgments concerning our morality. This is important because in certain situations these concepts (morality and feelings) can pull in opposite directions the conscience of an individual.
Bennett believes people can sometimes struggle between their morality and what the right thing is to do. This conflict can occur in the minds of people with good moral values and also those considered having bad moral values.
